FORMER pop star Kim Wilde will be among the green-fingered specialists unveiling their specially-designed gardens at the 12th Holker Hall Garden Festival this weekend.
In Cark-in-Cartmel, near Grange-over-Sands, the popular horticultural event opens today (Friday) with plenty on offer to keep all the family entertained regardless of gardening expertise.
Growing in stature and reputation each year, hundreds of trade stands offering gardening products, country clothing, wine and handcrafted gifts will be among the splendid garden displays at the annual event.
And, as well as getting gardening advice from renowned horticulturalists, the flagship event of the Holker season offers visitors the opportunity to view Lord and Lady Cavendish's rare collection of Styracaceae in the formal gardens.
Of those competing for the highly sought after gold medal, will be garden design lecturers Shelagh Todd and Helen Hall, of the University of Central Lancashire's Cumbria Campus at Newton Rigg. Their eye-catching entry, Quadrille, is based on a square dance with metal quadrilles of black water, complementary plants and three stunning giant dragonfly sculptures created by renowned designer Steve Blaycock.
The festival is open from 10am to 6pm Friday and Saturday and on Sunday from 10am to 5.30pm. Advance tickets are available by calling 015395-58328 or for more information visit the website at www.holker-hall.co.uk .
