THE construction of the sculpture depicting the Lake-land hills has been going on for several months and shows little sign of being completed.
For the last three bank holiday weekends, this has presented visitors to Morecambe with a rusty pile which blocks the magnificent view across the bay.
The list of names haphazardly placed on the sculpture will lead visitors to believe that Barrow is somewhere behind Heysham and Arnside has gone to Grange.
Perhaps the purpose of the sculpture is to serve as misinformation for invading forces?
Whatever the real purpose, it is yet another mess attributable to the city council. This is a misconceived idea which, if it had to be built, should have taken two weeks and cost much, much less than £20,000!
Surely it is time the council was told to concentrate on basic maintenance such as street cleaning and emptying dustbins while schemes involving vision and capital expenditure should be the subject of a referendum whereby the council tells the public, in advance, the details of what it proposes, how much it will cost and how long it will take to deliver.
I would be delighted to know if the council has been involved in any scheme in the last 10 years that is generally considered a success. And if there is one, what was the total cost?
