Committed anti-regional government campaigners warn that the restructuring of local government in the wake of a yes' vote will hit Cumbrian taxpayer's pockets.
Former Tory minister Sir David Trippier, chairman of the official No' campaign against evolution, warned that Boundary Committee's recommendations "risked triggering increases in council tax bills to fund the changes."
"Families living in Cumbria, Lancashire and Cheshire will be hit with a double whammy. Not only will their council tax bills rise to fund the scrapping of their county councils - council tax bills will also increase to fund the Assembly's running costs.
And, as we have seen in Scotland, Wales and London, those running costs far outstrip initial estimates. "The only way to stop this is to vote no to the North West Assembly.
It would simply not be worth the millions it would cost to set up and run," he said.
