A WALK up the 2,500ft mountain of Wetherlam in the Furness fells near Coniston awaits people wanting to take part in Volunteers Week.
The Ulverston-branch of the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers stages the event on June 2 as part of Volunteers Week, which takes place between June 1 and 7.
Between Tuesday, June 1, and Thursday, June 3, the organisation is also running a conservation project at Brantwood, on the north-eastern side of Coniston Water.
Volunteers are needed by BTCV to take part in improving access across a boggy area of the Brantwood Estate and using materials such as birch brash and sheep fleeces.
The construction will be based on the same principles as the ancient tracks on the Somerset levels, constructed thousands of years ago.
For those wanting to take part in the work at Brantwood, a lift is available from Barrow train station at 9am and Ulverston at 9.30am or, alternatively, meet in the Brantwood car park at 10am. A grant from the Friends of the Lake District has been given to allow the work to go-ahead. Those interested in the walk up Wetherlam should meet at Tilberthwaite car park off the A593 north of Coniston from 10am on June 2.
Walkers are advised that the trek is strenuous and should take wet weather gear, sturdy boots and a packed lunch. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied an adult.
The volunteers include people of a wide range of ages and backgrounds. They offer people the opportunity to learn a variety of new skills such as dry stone walling, footpath construction and habitat management. BTCV also provides college-accredited training courses. New volunteers are always welcome and the projects run each week on a Tuesdays and Thursdays.
People wanting to take part in both events are advised to book a place.
