APPLEBY'S newly-elected town mayor, Councillor Frank Harland, led the parade from the ancient moot Hall to the parish church of St Lawrence's for the annual "Mayors Sunday" service to celebrate the induction of the new mayor and to give solemn thanks.
Flanked by town clerk Brian Row and deputy mayor Keith Morgan, the mayor was preceded by his symbols of office, the mace carried by Councillor Gareth Hayes and the ceremonial sword carried by Michael Graham, with the town band under the direction of Donald Gilthorpe playing. Supporting the mayor were councillors Ella Langan; Barbara Swinscoe; Lance Thwaytes; Charles Rooke; Nick Swinscoe; Stan Rooke and Clare Pattinson.
service was conducted by the Rev Roger Collinson with the organ being played by Geoff Gordon who also leads the superb church choir.
After the service the town band again played as the civic party returned to the Moot Hall where the youth organisations formed up and Warrant Officer Dougie Bell of the Appleby Squadron The Air Training Corps, invited the mayor to inspect the parade.
Cpl Simon Walton was the standard bearer for the ATC, escorts Sarah George and Emma Barnard; Shane Kay was bearing the flag of the 1st Appleby Scouts, with his escorts being Scott Devine and James Atkinson, and Scouter in charge Graham Devine assisted by Ian Dowson; with the cubs flag being carried by Steven Hagon-Hood with Escorts, Callum MacDonald and Christopher Pigney.
The young Beavers standard was being carried by Joe Forrester with Escorts Kieran Kay and Duncan Harvey; Appleby Guides Standard was carried by Grace Renny, escorted by Emma Metcalf and Sophie Forster, with Guide Leader Jean Truman; 1st Appleby Brownies had Emma Davies bearing their standard with Samantha Schugg and Jodie Henderson as escorts, and Brown Owl Jennifer Smith; the standard of the 2nd Appleby Brownies was carried by Zo Aitkin, with escorts Amy Coward and Nellie Harbot, with their Brown Owl, Sue Grainger.
The Mayor and his mayoress, Alice Palmer, then entertained the leaders of the youth organisations, the councillors and their wives and partners and members of the town band to a buffet in the town's council chamber, helping the mayoress were Barbara Wright and Elizabeth Tyson.
