ELEVEN-year-old Joe Stamper from Penrith has won the U11 boys' competition at the St Leonard's Junior Golf Championships held at St Andrew's.
A member at Penrith Golf Club, Joe represented his school, Catteral Hall, Giggleswick, in the competition. "It was absolutely freezing cold and I had to wear two jumpers and a coat to keep warm," he said. "It was quite difficult to play with so many clothes on!".
Joe has only been playing golf for two years and already held a handicap of 19 prior to his latest win. He is also a member of the "Tigers", a section of Vilamoura golf club in Portugal which which selects promising young players for coaching.
A boarder at Catteral Hall, Joe keeps up his golf during term time by playing most days at Settle Golf Club, which is next to the school, as well as taking golf as one of his games options.
Joe's next competition will be the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS) Championships at Lytham St Annes in June. He will follow in the footsteps of elder sister Alex, also a pupil at Giggleswick School, who won the U13 girls' section of this competition last year.
