TIM Collins MP officially opened the new cardiac centre at Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal.
The unit has been up and running since the middle of April, and patients have been able to experience a purpose-designed centre, built to a very high standard, which eliminates the need for them to travel to other hospitals for treatment.
The £2.3 million centre is one of only two suites outside regional cardiac surgery centres in the North West, and includes state-of-the-art X-ray equipment in a self-contained room, attached to a seven-bed day unit.
Mr Collins, MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, was invited to open the centre where patients can have a coronary angiography to establish if they need heart surgery, and have pace-makers implanted.
Morecambe Bay Hospitals NHS Trust chief executive Ian Cumming said: "He (Tim Collins) is a great supporter of Westmorland General Hospital and I know is very pleased that this unit has been placed in Kendal providing a valuable additional service to the local community."
