RACE ORGANISERS at Cartmel steeplechases have put their money on a new £1.5 million grandstand to improve facilities for punters.

Work on the £1.5m stand (pictured) began at the end of last August immediately after the 2003 August Bank Holiday meeting. Builders are busy putting the final touches to the construction in time for this year's May Bank Holiday meetings on May 26, 29 and 31.

Although race organisers have been keen to retain all of Cartmel's unique character, racegoers will notice a very different skyline when attending the first race meeting this year.

The new grandstand has more stepping to improve race viewing and a new restaurant facility with seating for 120 and a private balcony. Racing professionals will also notice a difference with a new weighing room, medical room and changing facility as well as a new viewing terrace for owners, trainers and annual members. Dickon Knight, agent for Holker Estates, said that he welcomed the improved facilities. "We are delighted that we were able to build the grandstand within eight months," he said. "However, much of the landscaping is yet to be completed, although we expect the stand to fit into its surrounding environment during the summer months.

"We are very excited to have such a beautiful new building that will provide enjoyment to many visitors to Cartmel for racing. The new grandstand will allow for activity on non-race days which will provide economic benefit for the local community."

A major change to Cartmel's May meeting will be the switch from daytime to evening racing for the fixture on May 29. On the day, the gates will open at noon with entertainment for all the family throughout the day. Racing will start at 2.15pm on May 26 and May 31.
