THERE is no place for racism in the city of Lancaster'.
That was the clear message from an evening of Diversity, Decency and Welcome to Lancaster' held in the town hall.
Organised by local MP Hilton Dawson, it has been hailed as the best night ever' in the historic building An estimated 250 people crammed into what the MP describes as a joyous and celebratory event' where African, Indian and Chinese food was shared along with music and poetry from many corners of the world.
Hilton says: "The evening was a spectacular success and a fantastic tribute to our wonderful community.
"I am utterly grateful to all those who came forward freely to provide food, to sing and play music, to read poetry, to speak and to provide information about work and research in the city."
The delighted MP adds: "A fantastic range of people attended, young and old, Sikhs, Hindus and Moslems, Chinese and Sudanese and many more. There was a wonderful atmosphere of friendship and interest in each other.
"This is the future of Lancaster. We have a growing multi-racial, multi cultural city and the very clear message is that the people of Lancaster enjoy our diversity, welcome those who come here from across the world and celebrate the contribution that everyone can make."
