I write to enquire about the possibility of you running an article about a request for family I may have in and around Kendal to get in touch with me.
My Great, Great Grandfather (Thomas Stables) was born in Kendal in 1844, the eldest of at least 14 surviving children. Married in 1862 in Kendal, he later left for Kirkcaldy in Scotland where he remarried and had four children.
From what little I know, his life was colourful, and I am sure it would make an interesting article.
Titus was my direct ancestor, and as you can see he and some of his sisters had what seem to be very unusual names - Zillah, Huldah and Hagar were all female. Titus was married initially to Eliza Gudgeon on Christmas Day 1862 in Kendal Parish Church. I do not know if they had family, but would be very keen to find out. By 1872 he had moved to Kirkcaldy in Scotland, and under a false name of Walter Harris bigamously married Isabella Grant. He was discovered and convicted of bigamy by the time their first child was born in Scotland in 1875. I do not know what penalty (if any) was handed down when he was convicted between 1872 and 1875. He went on to have another three children in Scotland, so in all four sons. I have a fairly complete history of his ancestors after he moved to Scotland due to the ease if accessing the Scottish Birth, Death & Marriage Records. His death was also unusual, in 1887 at the age of only 43 he died by falling over window' (which I have been told means fell out of window) between 1:00 and 2:00 am at his home in Kirkcaldy.
I'm really interested in any family he may have had before moving to Scotland, as well as family descended from his many siblings. My family has no photo of him or his wife, and did not even know who he was before we looked up old records. Hopefully someone around Kendal can add to our knowledge!
I particularly want to hear from anyone who can tell me more of his life, or any of his siblings and their subsequent families.
If this would be of any interest to your paper I would be delighted to provide what parts of the story I have, to allow it to be written into an article.
I look forward to hearing from you, Alasdair Stables 28 Rankine Wynd Tullibody Clackmannanshire FK10 2UW T: 01259 212452 M: 07977 487608 Please leave a message below for Alasdair, contact him directly, or send an email to digital.media@kendal.newsquest.co.uk for forwarding.
