ANYONE who wants to get involved with the spectacular Staveley Carnival has the opportunity to join in a two-month workshop programme which is being launched on Monday.
The carnival project was started in 2000 by a group of enthusiasts who wanted to bring an arts event to Staveley and to foster a creative community spirit.
The project has grown in popularity and the organisers say that this year promises to be the biggest and most exciting yet.
The Staveley Carnival Project 2004 will encompass a two-month workshop programme culminating in a weekend of carnival festivities, on July 9, 10 and 11.
Those behind the event say that it is a community-based Brazilian style' carnival bursting with energy and colour. The procession is fuel free with bicycle-powered floats that wind their way through the streets.
Organiser Shelley Barlow said: "The two-month carnival project provides the opportunity for local communities to be involved in costume making, dance, circus skills, multi media and even be a part of the Staveley Community Samba Band. Many of the workshops work towards a performance which will be displayed over the carnival weekend."
Anyone of any age is welcome to join in the workshops. Details can be found in the workshop programmes that are available in shops and cafes in Staveley and tourist information centres.
The theme for this year's carnival is the mystical odyssey and the procession will be in four sections: legends of the foothills; myths of the warrior world; tales of the ocean kingdom; and magical fantasies of music.
