Learning as an adult can be a way to pick your life up by the scruff of the neck and get control of where you are going.
Graham King, 19, of Torrisholme, enrolled in a day release course at Lancaster and Morecambe College to help him advance himself as a heavy plant fitter.
He is studying an advanced modern apprenticeship (NVQ levels 2 and 3) in engineering (fabrication and welding) and works at the Bardon Aggregate Industries quarry, in Burton-in-Kendal.
Two afternoons a week, he gets to grips with improving himself. He said: "I have good teachers who are keen to help with any problems and there's a good group of lads in our group.
"I enjoy coming to college and would recommend the course to others. In the future, I hope to gain further education and eventually work overseas."
Nineteen-year-old Elleray Taylor, a former Dallam School student from Levens, and also a student at LMC, had the confidence to change her course when she realised it was not right for her.
Switching a travel and tourism course for one in business has opened a path to a career in corporate life.
She said she had really enjoyed the course so far and found it very interesting: "During both years of this business course, I've had two very good tutors who have been helpful and supportive. They've given me plenty of advice and encouragement throughout the course.
"In September, I want to go on to the University of Central Lancashire, in Preston, to study business and marketing."
