Sir, Complaints about our health service are a constant feature of life. Indeed, I am sure I remember seeing front-page articles in The Westmorland Gazette in recent years when local people have had to wait for excessive periods for treatment, or that certain treatment is not available in the area.
In the last year or two huge amounts of cash have been diverted by the Government into improving the health service, and all we seem to hear is that the service is no better.
So, when the Bay area is set to get 32 new registrars covering a wide range of specialities, the news is tucked away in a corner of page 7 of your paper, under what could hardly be described as a banner headline (Gazette, April 30, Bay to get 32 registrars').
No wonder people are willing to believe the "gutter" tabloid press when it tells us that things only get worse. I do not belong to a political party, but, come on Gazette, give credit where credit is due! We all know that "no news is good news", but let's not fall into the trap of thinking that "good news is no news".
Roger Wilkinson, Leasgill.
Editor's Note: The news was one of two late good news breaks about the health service as we put the newspaper to bed on Thursday afternoon. One about dentists made the front page, because of previous campaigns. The other, about the registrars, was placed where we could. The Westmorland Gazette always strives to print good news as well as bad.
