A RICH vein of young musical talent runs through this region and there is no better platform to demonstrate this than the South Cumbria and Mary Wakefield music festivals; and the other entertaining youth ensembles that flourish around the county, reports Adrian Mullen.

This week I have news that the Cartmel Music Centre Recorder Quintet has been selected from 40,000 children nationwide to perform at the prestigious Festival of Music for Youth at London's South Bank on July 8.

Under the guidance of Judith Pool, the five-piece won the FMY chamber music section at the regional final at Whitehaven, with Shades of Blue, a jazzy piece by Grange-over-Sands composer Chris Gibbs.

It was a great achievement, and the quintet of Tom and Melissa Gray, Alison and Claire Robson and Joanna Lawrence, have every reason to be thrilled at the prospect of performing in the bright lights of capital.

It just so happens that Chris's composition can be heard on Sunday (7.30pm) at the Victoria Hall, Grange-over-Sands, in the Cartmel Music Centre Meets Lakeland Composers concert.

It promises to be a feast of music as Lakeland Composers - who boast some of the top music writers and musicians in the area, such as Roland Fudge, Adrian Self, Arthur Butterworth, Roger Cann, Leslie Meurant and Robin Field team-up with many of the music centre's young players, including the recorder quintet.

Also on the bill is Barrow's Chetwynde School Girls Choir.

Staged as part of the Grange Concert Club series, tickets are £5 and are available from Grange Tourist Information Office or at the door.
