PERMISSION to make improvements to Haverthwaite Railway Station on the scenic Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway line has been granted by the Lake District National Park Authority.
The railway company applied to erect a two-storey building to provide a new shop, education room, office space and storage in order to develop the existing tourist attraction at the station.
This would involve the demolition of the existing timber shop building and part of an existing boundary wall between the shop and the platform.
Charlotte Douglas, the planning officer who dealt with the new application under delegated powers, said that the proposed building was “essentially a replica of the existing station in form, scale, design and materials used".
She said it would represent “an improvement to the existing facility and potentially could increase the number of visitors to the site”.
