AFTER a two-month search, the mystery designer of the Windermere mayor’s medallion has been identified.
Sheila West, 55, won a competition to design the medallion when she was in the sixth form at Lakes School in the early 1970s.
Former Chair of Winder-mere Parish Council, Peter Birchall, launched the search for the designer in a letter to the Westmorland Gazette in July.
Now living in Scotland, Sheila heard about the search through friends.
“I had forgotten all about it until I was contacted,” said Mrs West, who entered the Lakes School competition to design the medal when she was 17 years old.
“I remember spending a long time in the library researching heraldry,” said Mrs West of the medal, which incorporates the Appleby coat of arms with representations of Lake District woodland and rivers.
