MORECAMBE and Lunesdale MP Geraldine Smith is leading an attempt to head off a national postal strike.

She has tabled an early day motion (EDM) in the Commons supporting a peace offer put forward by the Communication Workers Union and it has since been signed by more than 60 MPs.

The EDM reads: "This House welcomes the proposals put forward by the Communication Workers Union seeking to find a resolution to the current postal dispute, in particular their offer to explore the possibility of third party mediation, and calls on the Government to do all in its power to ensure that Royal Mail responds positively to the union's proposal."

The union has warned it will name strike dates on Thursday unless there is a last-minute breakthrough to the deadlocked dispute.

The Royal Mail condemned the threat of a national strike last night and called on the union to call off the threatened action, warning it was damaging the entire postal service.
