A spokesman for the trust said: "We are very proud of Furness General Hospital. Our staff work extremely hard, day in, day out, to provide top class healthcare for everyone in Barrow and the surrounding area.

“We’re the only hospital that receives trauma patients on the west coast of Cumbria and we’re strengthening our services. Our midwives deliver more than one thousand babies every year and we’re totally committed to keeping the consultant-led maternity unit in Barrow.

“Thank you to all our staff, patients, fundraisers and you, the community, for your support over the past 25 years – here’s to the next quarter century."
