TRADITIONAL Lake District Herdwick wool is being used to make fashionable designer mens headwear.

Kendal-based fashion house Cherchbi has launched the 1571 Herdwick Cap, which is made from 100 per cent undyed wool from the Cumbrian mountain breed.

The cap is named after an act of Parliament that forced men to wear woolen headwear on formal occasions.

“The 1571 Herdwick Cap is named after the 1571 Act of Parliament which stated that common men over six years of age must wear English-made woollen caps on Sundays and holidays or face a fine of three farthings a day,” said Adam Atkinson, designer and owner of Cherchbi. “It’s thought that this Act of Parliament was responsible for the association between flat caps and working class men.

“The cap style is cut with a very deep back which offers excellent fit and protection from the elements. The stiffened peak is hand-stitched and a full cotton lining provides comfort and ventilation.”
