HEDGE-LAYING may be an ancient art but there are still plenty of modern souls keeping up the tradition.
Some 24 hopefuls lopped and bent boughs at the Friends of the Lake District's annual hedge-laying competition at Gilpin Bridge on Saturday -- a record turnout for the event.
The competition is part of a grand prix of hedge-laying events covering Lancashire and Westmorland, which is now led by Saturday's open class winner Peter Gibson, of Kendal.
The judges commended the high standard and singled out the large novice section for particular praise.
Event organiser Ian Brodie, of FLD, said: "This competition shows how countryside skills, farming and conservation can work together."
Open class winners were: 1 Peter Gibson (Kendal); 2 Alan Duckett (Yealand Conyers); 3 Andrew Kirkmoor (Endmoor). Improvers Class: 1 Michael Close (Morecambe); 2 Mike Teasdale (Burnley); 3 David Wilby (Blackpool). Novice Class: 1 Alex Rickman; (Preston); 2 John Duckworth (Morecambe); 3 Adrian Higginson (Leyland).
