I WAS concerned to read the report in the Citizen of the wall collapse at the Aldi store on Morecambe promenade.
First, I was surprised to learn that all Aldi store telephone numbers are ex-directory and amazed at the comment from the regional office. But the news was more worrying later.
Construction work on this store on a prominent site was apparently not approved at any stage by the local council but was passed by a building inspector acting for the supermarket.
No doubt we would get short shrift from the city council if any of us ordinary ratepayers were to propose such an arrangement for work at our homes.
Elsewhere in last week's paper are other examples of the city council and various Government departments not doing the work for which they were elected and for which staff are paid. It would appear they are expert at passing the buck but less able at getting involved.
