SO, according to letters last week, Cllr Millar thinks that an almost 10 per cent increase in council tax is positive news?

An increase of more than three times the retail price index and six times the Government's preferred index is very bad news, and instead of blaming a previous administration for the situation, Cllr Millar should be making a grovelling apology to taxpayers for his arrogance.

As for only one council spending our money, perhaps he could explain why Lancaster City Council is having discussions with Barrow and South Lakeland councils about unitary local government.

Lancaster City Council seems to think that the combining of the three bodies is a foregone conclusion even though it is reported not to be South Lakeland's preferred choice.

The consultation period for comments on the draft proposals does not end for another two weeks and households have yet to see the Boundary Committee's leaflet on the draft recommendations. Further, estimates of the cost of any changes are said to be a minimum £20 million.

Is it possible that in future years Cllr Millar will be congratulating himself on council tax increases of only triple figures.
