HIGHER water bills could continue the vicious circle of customer debt, say committee members of the regional watchdog WaterVoice North West.
The committee questioned United Utilities Water on the steps it is taking to tackle the growing problem of debt for customers and the water industry, which has risen significantly since 1998-99. Long-term customer debt is currently estimated at £434 million.
Despite its recently successful application to Ofwat to increase bills from April 1 by more than originally allowed at the last price review, the company gave a commitment to work with members in seeking ways to reduce the problem.
Maurice Terry, WaterVoice North West chairman, said: "Many customers are already struggling to pay their bills and do not have the ability to budget for such dramatic price increases.
"This vicious circle must be stopped. We are pleased that United Utilities has agreed to work with us to find a way forward on this issue."
