YOUNG farmers from Cumbrian clubs have rounded off a good year with a strong showing at the YFC National Competitions Day and a successful annual meeting.
More than 60 people from Cumbrian YFC teams competed with counterparts from all over the country in the culmination of the National Federation of YFC’s competitive calendar at the Royal Showground in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire.
Lisa Mason from Kent Estuary YFC took top honours in the national Recruitment Poster Design competition with this design.
Lisa, 20, from Heaves Farm, near Kendal, is currently at the University of Teesside in Middlesborough, training to be a physiotherapist. She said she was “quite surprised” but pleased to have won the national competition.
In public speaking classes, YFCs from South Cumbria excelled in the Call My Bluff competition with Grayrigg taking first place and Crook YFC third.
Nicola Wilkinson, from Raughton Head, won the Intermediate Design competition with Hazel Cornthwaite, from Lowick YFC, coming fifth.
Amy Richardson, from Eden Valley YFC, came third in the junior design competition.
James Brownrigg, Cumbria YFC county chairman, said: “It has been an excellent week-end and year for Cumbria YFCs and we are very proud of all our members who have competed at the national level.” At the Cumbria Federation of YFCs annual meeting, Mr Brownrigg, the outgoing chairman, paid tribute to the county’s clubs for an “outstanding year” with notable successes from Wayne Inman, David Wright and James Hayllar winning the national dairy event and Anita Graham, of Ireby YFC, becoming the third generation of her family to win the National Junior Dairy Class for Cumbria.
At the AGM, Mr Brownrigg was superceded by the new CFYFC chairman Ian Strong, of Greysouthern YFC. Will Case from the Lowick club was elected vice-chairman.
This year’s top club award went to Pennine YFC and the Mrs Dorrie Galbraith Trophy - for the member making the greatest contribution not otherwise recognised - went to Johnny Little, of Eden Valley YFC.
Rodger Read, chief executive of the Westmorland Agricultural Society, was appointed CFYFC president and Mrs Betty Graham, of Ireby YFC, was elected as vice-president.
