WESTMORLAND and Lonsdale's MP and Britain’s biggest rail union have called for a public enquiry into the Grayrigg train crash after it was revealed that no one will face charges.
Three Network Rail employees were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the accident involving a Virgin Pendolino service, which killed 84-year-old Scotswoman, Margaret Masson, and left 86 other passengers injured.
A 64-year-old and a 60-year-old, both from Tebay, were released without charge in November last year and British Transport Police have now confirmed that the last of the men, a 46-year-old from Preston, has also been released from police bail without charge.
A BTP spokesman said: “BTP can confirm that, following advice from the Criminal Prosecution Service, there will be no further action taken against the individuals arrested in relation to the Grayrigg incident. They have, therefore, been released from police bail.”
