Indian journalist Uma Maheshwari will be visiting Kendal next week to raise awareness of the campaign to stop the building of the Polavaram Dam in India.
As part of her brief visit to the United Kingdom she is speaking in London and Kendal.
The Polavaram Dam project in Andrha Pradesh will dam the second largest river in the nation leading to the displacement of some 200,000 people.
The project proposes to submerge about 44,763.84 hectares of land including forest land and 277 village settlements to pave the way for an ‘industrial corridor.’ Journalist and author Uma Maheshwari is anxious to try to raise the profile of the dam outside of India and her book on the subject will be published by Penguin next year.
On January 8th she will be meeting Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron before speaking at a meeting hosted by South Lakes World Development Movement.
Through pictures and recorded interviews she will tell the stories of the villagers who will be effected. The meeting is open to all and will be held at Castle Street Community Centre at 7.30pm.
