SCIENCE students from Kirkby Stephen Grammar School Sports College were invited to attend a lecture by big bang expert and Oxford University professor Brian Foster and leading violinist Jack Liebeck.
Appleby Grammar School hosted the Superstrings the lecture – a celebration of Einstein and physics, with music by the world’s most famous scientist’s favourite composers, Mozart and Kreisler.
Prof Foster said: “We started giving the lecture, with musical interludes as part of the World year of Physics three years ago, and we have been continuing to tour ever since, where our schedules permit.
“A great deal of the physics is very difficult to understand, and even our undergraduates struggle with many of the concepts, but the aim of the talk is to make the theory more accessible and we do cover the big bang theory.”
Albert Einstein the man is the starting point for the talk, looking at how his first job working for the railways, trying to ensure all the clocks around the network were accurate and showing the same time led to his theories of time and motion.
Jack added: “As well as a scientist, Einstein was a great musician and played the violin everyday. Mozart and Kreisler were his favourite composers.”
The sixth form students from Kirkby Stephen joined year 10-13 students from Appleby who were invited to the event.
