Some months ago Sandside Lodge School in Ulverston won a National Lottery award for additional funding for a Adventure Playground.
The idea for the playground came from Michelle Wharley, PE Instructor at the school, she felt the children needed a stimulating play area when sent out to play at school playtime.
As part of the award the school had to raise £20,000 themselves and they did this not only by fundraising but by donations from the local community.
After putting their bid together and proving they would be working in partnership, they then had to go throught a competition process with other bidders, this was all done on live TV and the public vote.
Thursday 9th October and all their good work came to fruition, when they opened not only the Adventure Zone Special Needs Playground but a Sensory Garden as well.
It was magical watching the children, all who have special needs playing on specially adapted play equipment from round-a-bouts to play puzzles, there was even a large Gazebo where the older students could sit and discuss daily issues.
My self and the Mayor of Barrow Cllr. Dave Roberts opened the area, tea and biscuits were served by the older students. Sadly Dave Myers TV Chef and Hairy Biker (who was supposed to open the playground) was unable to be there, but has promised to visit the children soon.
