Last Friday we heard the results to this year’s Cumbria in Bloom awards. For the third year running we have exceeded all expectations – Best Large Town in Cumbria and Best Town and Urban District!
A result we can all be proud, the floral displays in and around the Town look magnificent, but these are not the only reason we won. The number of local residents taking pride in their area, communal floral displays, baskets, gardens, allotments, schools painting and planting pots. The volunteer helpers on the Kendal in Bloom working party – Westmorland Horticultural Society- SLACC- SLDC- Civic Society – Growing Well – Kendal Town Council members – Kendal Tourism group – to name but a few.
The main aim behind the Bloom is not to win but to make our Town an attractive place to live and work. Attracting visitors and showing them how beautiful it can be. The better the environment around you the more likely you are to respect and look after it.
The rain has not been kind to us this year but in the circumstances, the flowers have come out on top.
We are starting planning for next season with a winter planting scheme, including herbs and seasonal plants in the Town centre units. This coming week we will have a working group committee meeting to start moving forward into next year – What will we come up with this time? Fruit and vegetables in the displays, you never know.
Any body interested in helping out with Kendal in Bloom 2009, call along to the Town Council office and leave your contact details. More hands make light work!
