I READ in the paper today that despite seemingly ever-increasing prices and television coverage attendance at football matches is on the rise.
I don’t think this comes as a surprise to many but the bubble could be on th everge of bursting if prices don’t start to drop.
The reason clubs know they can put up prices is because they know fans will still buy the tickets.
I can’t understand people who say they aren’t going to a match because it’s on television – I hate it when people say that. Football isn’t the same if you aren’t at the ground – there’s no atmosphere, you can’t join in the banter that the television cameras don’t pick up and you can’t say “I was there”.
That’s my biggest fear on the odd occasion I have to miss games, I always fear missing that memorable once in a lifetime performance that you want to be able to say “I saw that”.
However, despite the seemingly endless pot of money that fans like me don’t have there will become a point where people just have to turn around and say “I can’t afford to go”. That would be the biggest shame of all if the real fans are priced out of the game.
Full credit to Everton and the few other clubs reducing prices for season ticket holders because without fans in the stadium football will be a lesser game.
