So three Premiership bosses have already left their clubs within a week of the season finishing – some would say that’s no surprise.
But what stood out for me was the honesty of Stuart Pearce, which for me was a breath of fresh air.
Both Warnock and Jewell went of their own accord but Pearce was pushed, and so, you might think, would have something to moan about, a compensation claim perhaps (just ask David O’Leary and Sven).
But no Pearce had the dignity to say “if they don’t want me I’ll shake their hand and walk away”, or something to that effect. He also questioned why he should get paid for not managing a club, by the way of a pay off.
For me, that was Pearce’s problem as a manager – he was too honest and tried to please too many people – but it’s what people want to see.
If a manager professes his love for a club and the fans then why should he want to stab them in the back when he gets fired and prove a financial burden.
If it was up to me Pearce’s actions would set a precedent where no-one has the right to money when they get fired – especially when such high amounts of money are swilling about in the game.
I hope he goes on to do really well at another club and it wouldn’t surprise me if he turns out to be a good manager in the future – he will certainly be missed in the Premiership.
Good luck Pearce!
