IT was with much pleasure that I watched events unfold in Athens last night but I hope it helps the kopites understand what it means to be the best team.
Time and again the kopites argue that winning the Champions League is the most difficult to achieve and the most-coveted trophy – the one that the best team wins.
Alas my biased friends, last night was the perfect example of why the best team in Europe does not always win the Champions League.
Two years ago the reds luckily beat Milan and this time around it could be argued that the kopites were the better side – I wouldn’t say that and even Gerrard and Carragher said as much afterwards so I’m sure but we could debate that all day long.
Anyway, my point is that to win cup competitions requires a bit of luck along the way – like Inzaghi had last night.
The ultimate test of a team is if they can win the domestic league – the best team ALWAYS wins. Look at United this year – and look how far behind the kopites were – as far away as ever.
We keep hearing the “we’ll win it next year” line and even the kopites must be sick of trotting out the same old rubbish. Let’s face it they’ve got no chance next season. Who has starred for them this season? I’m struggling to find answers like you are…
List your players of the season – Drogba, Ronaldo, Scholes, Giggs – the likes of Gerrard are nowhere to be seen. Look at the stats – the two best players on Merseyside were Arteta and Johnson.
All of a sudden most kopites think Bellamy should leave in the summer – surely they can’t afford to lose a “world class” striker – oh that’s right he’s not world class. We want someone who is more consistent they cry – what about Andy Johnson – they won’t admit it but he’s been a better buy than Bellamy.
And to top it all their website posted a story saying they had won the Chamipons League last night – could there be any bigger joke than Liverpool FC at the moment.
Come on lads hold your hands up, take off your red-tinted spectacles and admit it – you’re rubbish!
Talking about quality strikers, last night took me back to the good old days when Italian football was on Channel 4. In my opinion Pipo Inzaghi is the ultimate goal poacher. Some say last night’s opener was a fluke – but I would believe him if he said it was a training ground move. He’s the best finisher I’ve seen – great footballer he’s not, great goalscorer he is!
It remains to be seen whether last night will be his last big moment in the game but what a career he’s had – he personifies what it means to have the number nine shirt.
