FOR some reason we’ve had a ridiculous debate over the last week about whether draws could be scrapped and even games decided on a penalty shoot-out – what a load of rubbish this is.
Why do people constantly have to tinker with football when it’s great as it is.
Yesterday was a perfect example. If draws were decided on penalties I don’t think we would have seen Johnson’s last minute winner for Everton. Instead, both teams would have settled for a draw knowing that they could pick up an extra point in the shoot-out.
Some rule changes, such as the backpass rule, have benefited the game – but making too many unnecessary alterations would trivialise the game.
I even think the seemingly inevitable goal-line technology that will be brought in is a waste of time. Although Blackburn will feel hard done by after the goal that wasn’t was given it is just part of the game!
Human error adds to the excitement and gives people something to talk about after the game. Stupid comments like “that goal could cost a team millions of pounds” are nonsense.
The league table does not lie and one decision won’t make or break a season.
I think people that come up with these ideas to make football seemingly more exciting must be armchair fans who want more things to do when they press the red button – after all some nil nil draws can be really exciting.
However, if draws were settled by shoot-outs then maybe England would have a chance of winning a spot kick decider in one of the major tournaments because players would get lots of practice!
