WAS anyone else for some strange reason compelled to watch that waste-of-time football match involving Man Utd and “Europe XI” last night?
Fair enough it was raising money for a good cause but those watching would have got almost as much entertainment writing a cheque for £30 and sending it to the charity concerned.
It just shows where money is to be made finance comes before football.
How often do we hear Fergie or Benitez moan about the number of games they have to play and here we are in one of the most congested parts of the season playing a meaningless “friendly”.
And as for a Europe XI – it was more like (especially in the second half) a Foreigners in the English Game Who Can Be Bothered To Play XI.
Why couldn’t the game have been played at the beginning or end of the season?
Most fans hate friendlies because there is no commitment because no one wants to get injured – but there was nothing to take from this game because none of the players really lack match practice.
The only good thing was the constant booing of Gerrard when he touched the ball.
