THE reaction of Wigan’s manager Paul Jewell after their unlucky defeat to Arsenal on Sunday summed up for me another great aspect of football – the passion.
He was absolutely furious with the referee for a number of decisions that went against his side including the stonewall penalty that was never given.
It was brilliant to see how much it mattered when he marched onto the pitch at the end finger-pointing and shouting at the officials.
The mad thing is the FA want to clamp down on this – and no doubt the referee will get away scot-free after making some terrible blunders.
Possibly it does set a bad example for youngsters who might think it’s alright to have a go at the officials – but why not?
Jewell’s face was brilliant - contorted with rage. That’s what we want in charge of England – someone with some passion. So to those at the FA – take note – the next England manager needs a bit of fire in his belly. And to take action against Jewell is scandalous – it’s part of the game so let’s get on with it. If anything demote the referee as punishment for making some glaring errors.
