An award-winning butchery organised a discussion event titled 'Meat Matters - Diet & Lifestyle'.

Roast Mutton in Kendal, owned by Robert Unwin, hosted this event at Bakery at No4, Woolpack Yard.

Mr Unwin teamed up with his father, Dr David Unwin, to explore the topic of healthy eating.

Mr Unwin, who supports the principles of the carnivore diet, focuses on supplying locally sourced, grass-fed meat to customers.

He believes that this has brought about improvements in his sleep quality, strength, and overall endurance throughout the day.

Dr David Unwin is a prominent voice in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, particularly advocating for a low carbohydrate diet.

He serves as a clinical expert in Diabetes at the UK Royal College of General Practitioners and is the medical advisor to the Low Carb Program.

The event saw 60 guests attending, who listened to the father-son duo discuss the benefits and risks of slow-grown red meat in modern diets.

They also explored the best approaches to balancing the body’s needs, including discussions around lifestyle medicine and the importance of quality, slow-grown fresh produce in our diets.

The conversation also touched on the vitamins and minerals essential for optimal body functioning.

This reflects the increasing interest in lifestyle medicine among both the medical profession and the public.

This multi-disciplinary approach aims to help prevent, manage, and reverse certain chronic conditions through sustained lifestyle changes.

These include healthier eating, staying active, better sleep, improved social connections, mental health, and reduced harmful substance use.

Guests were also given the opportunity to ask questions and sample Roast Mutton’s Cumberland sausage and BBQ dry-aged steak.

The event raised £600 from ticket sales, which will be donated to Dr Unwin’s chosen charity, Collaborative Health Community (CHC).

CHC supports projects and initiatives aimed at improving the food environment and wellbeing in communities.

Robert Unwin said: "I really enjoyed being in conversation with Dr Unwin (aka my dad).

"It was a fascinating insight into a subject area we are both hugely passionate about.

"My dad’s efforts to raise awareness of the health benefits of eating properly is naturally something I’m very interested in and sits firmly in line with my ethos, especially when it comes to choosing where to source the meat that we as a business supply to our customers."

Dr Unwin said: "For the first 25 years of my life as a doctor, I thought lifelong medication was the answer to most modern diseases.

"Now I see prevention of things like diabetes, high blood pressure and even dementia is key.

"To do this, our Southport practice has shown what lifestyle medicine can do.

"To a large extent, we are what we eat, so avoiding junk food seems a good first step.

"As an example, I have 145 people who now enjoy drug-free T2 diabetes remission."
