AN ASPIRING doctor who died in a hiking accident in the Lake District has inspired a fundraiser.

Alex Lea, aged 23 at the time, died after falling from Pavey Ark in the Langdales with her family and friends now coming together to complete the Kielder Marathon in October in her honour.

This was done as Kielder was the first marathon that Alex ever completed, less than a year before the tragic accident.

It was revealed this week that, thanks to the fundraising efforts, £6,141 has so far been donated to the Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team, who brought Alex home in February.

Her mum, Sue Wright, said: "It was a very special day for all of us - the team were overwhelmed by the incredible support on and off the course, an amazing event made so special.

"Thanks to everyone who offered support, wished us well and donated to the mountain rescue in Alex’s memory.

"Alex was on the path to becoming an aspiring doctor at Sunderland University - let's hope she can save lives in some other way."

Alex's happy place was said to be among the mountains, inspiring anyone who knew her with 'boundless joy and positivity' and the way she challenged herself in trail running and multiple other sports.

"The tireless efforts of the LAMRT help those in need in the Lake District and the charity is run entirely by dedicated volunteers," Susan explained.

"Their commitment and expertise make the Lake District a safer place for everyone who ventures into its mountains."

Those who ran in Alex's memory all wore pink t-shirts to raise awareness of the importance of having bright and fluorescent clothing when running.

A simple choice can be the 'difference between life and death', particularly during the winter months and in adverse weather conditions.

Alex, from Hexham, fell while descending Pavey Ark in Langdale, an inquest heard.

Robert Cohen, assistant coroner for Cumbria, commended mountain rescue volunteers for the ‘exceptional work they do in the most difficult circumstances’.

He said: “I know how much they can struggle with cases where they have not been able to save somebody but I commend them for the thorough and professional job they did here.”
