A charity in south Cumbria has combined a love of knitting with the spooky season to create fundraising success.

Building upon the popularity seen in 2023 from the initiative, St Mary's Hospice of Ulverston invited people to create their own crocheted pumpkins back in September, ready for Halloween.

Organised by Lisa Greig, who works in the hospice's HR department, the pumpkin patch was based at The Orangery Cafe, inviting locals and supporters to collect them for a donation.

Lisa said: "We are absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity and support of our community - every pumpkin purchased and every penny donated means so much, not only to us at St Mary’s but also to the community we serve.

"This would not have been possible without the incredible volunteers who poured their hearts into creating pumpkins for us to share.

"Together, we've shown just how powerful a community can be in making a difference - thank you, from the bottom of our hearts."

The hospice revealed this week that this year's pumpkin patch has raised £2565, far exceeding 2023's total of £1,200.

The substantial fundraising effort will go a long way towards supporting the 'vital care and services' provided by St Mary’s to those facing life-limiting illness.

A spokesperson on behalf of the charity commented: "We extend our deepest gratitude to every single person who visited the Orangery, bought a pumpkin, gave up their time to knit and crochet the pumpkins and contributed so generously to this cause.

"Your support has not only boosted our fundraising total but also demonstrated the power of community in making a meaningful difference."

Special thanks was given to the 'incredible' volunteers, who dedicated their time, talent, and creativity in bringing the knitted creations to life.

"Each handmade pumpkin was a labour of love, and every sale brought us closer to our goal - without their dedication and hard work, this achievement would not have been possible.

"Lisa’s Pumpkin Patch has always been about more than just pumpkins, it’s about bringing people together to support a cause close to all of our hearts."
