Kirkbie Kendal School Sixth Form students achieve excellent results consistently from a wide range of subject choices with outstanding enrichment opportunities.

With its exceptional results and wide range of academic and vocational courses Kirkbie Kendal School Sixth Form is a great place to study. Our expert team of experienced staff will guide you through the transition from GCSE to A Levels and prepare you for life beyond Sixth Form, providing excellent advice for applying to university, for high level apprenticeships or employment.

The school values of Care, Hard Work, Resilience and Curiosity are embedded in Sixth Form life. The Sixth Form is described by Ofsted as offering a space where “students receive care, guidance and support from academic and pastoral staff,” and the Sixth Form places great emphasis on the wellbeing and pastoral care of its students, with one Year 13 student stating that: “There is always someone there to listen to you and help you in any way they can”.

Tutor groups are small, following a weekly programme to incorporate both academic work and pastoral support including one-to-one tutorials with Form Tutors. The comprehensive programme of careers guidance means that students are well prepared for any future plans, with appointments with an independent Careers Advisor. School staff go the extra mile in providing support with applications for gap years, scholarships, apprenticeships and university applications and interviews.

Sixth Form enrichment opportunities are a real strength at Kirkbie Kendal School, with opportunities ranging from studying a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification, learning sign language, leading sports teams as one of our Sports Leaders or taking conversation classes in a modern foreign language, to name a few of the options available.

Sixth Formers benefit from their own independent study spaces, a common room and a project work space. Learning to study independently is a vital part of the Sixth Form experience and support is provided on how to make the transition from GCSE to A level. The Sixth Form space to socialise is the common room, which is the ‘go-to’ place to meet with friends during the school day.

Developing leadership skills is part of the Sixth Form experience and students take positions of responsibility at school events, leading charity groups and working with younger students as part of the peer mentoring scheme or becoming one of the school’s Wellbeing Ambassadors.

Extra-curricular opportunities include representing the school in sport (there is a full fixture list for Sixth Form teams), competing in debating competitions and taking advantage of the many opportunities to perform in our school performances or in the annual school production in the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal.

In the last academic year members of the Sixth Form travelled to Poland, visiting historical sites of World War II, including a visit to Auschwitz. A Sixth Form trip took students to Malaysia, volunteering at a turtle sanctuary and experiencing the south east Asian culture. These trips are life changing opportunities for students.

If you would like to join a thriving Sixth Form at Kirkbie Kendal School we would like to invite you to join us on November 21, 2024, for our Open Evening, where you can talk to current students and staff about the opportunities available at our Sixth Form. We look forward to meeting you.
