The latest Ofsted report for St Thomas's CofE Primary School, in Kendal Green, Kendal, has been published following a two-day inspection on September 24 and September 25.

The school was given ratings across different categories, including 'Good' for Quality of Education; 'Good' for Behaviour and attitudes; 'Outstanding' for Personal development; 'Good' for Leadership and management; and 'Outstanding' for Early years provision.

Inspectors found that "pupils enjoy attending this popular and friendly school" and that the school "has high expectations for pupils’ academic success."

The report highlighted the school's effective fostering of "pupils’ curiosity and concentration from a young age," resulting in pupils generally achieving well in many subjects.

Children were reported to settle in "right from the start," with staff ensuring they are ready for learning in Year 1 and beyond.

The school was praised for its support for pupils’ mental health and well-being, helping pupils to become "confident and successful" learners.

A strong sense of community was reported, with pupils feeling that they belong, and a consistent approach to managing pupils’ behaviour.

The report noted that "pupils are respectful and sensitive to each other’s needs" and "make a positive contribution to the life of the school."

The school has designed an "ambitious, high-quality curriculum," which is enhanced with "rich, well-planned experiences."

Enrichment opportunities ignite pupils’ interests and broaden their aspirations and horizons, the report said.

The school identifies the additional needs of pupils with SEND accurately and quickly, and staff are well trained to meet the needs of these pupils so that they learn the same content as their peers.

The teaching of reading is prioritised, with staff benefiting from regular, specific training to support children’s ability to recognise and read sounds in the early years.

By the end of key stage 1, most pupils, including those with SEND, become fluent readers.

Staff feel "very proud to work at the school."

The school was advised to ensure that misconceptions are picked up quickly and addressed so that pupils develop secure knowledge and skills in all subjects.

Arrangements for safeguarding at the school are effective.
