THE River Kent, including the stretch through Kendal, will be re-stocked with trout to make the area a 'very attractive place to fish.'

The Kent and Westmorland Fishing Association (KWAA) has received funding from water company United Utilities to invest in increasing fish stocks through the River Kent.

The association wishes to attract young local anglers by re-stocking the river, which will start in spring next year. The Kendal town stretch is free to fish for under-16s and only needs a rod licence for over-16s.

Kelly Barrow, from United Utilities, said the company 'understands the frustration' felt by the local community and anglers towards their recent improvement works project on the River Kent, which is now complete.

"We’d like to thank everyone for their patience whilst these works have been undertaken," Ms Barrow said.

Ian Walker, president of the KWAA, said: "We are one of the oldest, however most progressive, fishing clubs in the country. It has been great to have such positive discussions to make these improvements with United Utilities to enhance fishing for anglers young and old.

"KWAA promotes barbless catch and release fishing and is committed to improving the environment on the River Kent."
