THE Kendal bypass (A591) will close tonight from 8pm as Westmorland and Furness Council undertakes 'urgent intrusive investigations' of Brigsteer and Underbarrow bridges.

A traffic notice has been put in place from today (October 21). The work will be carried out under night time working hours of 8pm and 6am only until Wednesday, October 23.

The notice prohibits the passage of all traffic from Plumgarth roundabout extending in a south easterly direction for a distance of approximately 4.8km.

According to the notice, suitable alternative routes are as follows:

  • Southbound: A5284, A6 Sandes Avenue, Blackhall Road, Stramongate, A65, Romney Road and the A6.
  • Northbound: A6, Lowther Street, A65 New Road, Blackhall Road, Sandes Avenue and the A5284.

To facilitate the alternative route the 18 tonne weight restriction will be temporarily suspended along the A6 from its junction with Nether Bridge extending a northerly direction to its junction with the A65.

Passage over the bridges has been blocked since June. The council closed them until further notice as a 'precautionary measure for public safety' due to structural concerns.
