A BRICK footbridge in Ulverston that has been closed for over a year will be replaced with a timber structure due to 'significant' issues, the council says.

Dragley Beck footbridge was closed in June 2023 after council officers inspected it and found 'significant structural issues due to a substantial part of the arch thickness being lost.'

A spokesperson from Westmorland and Furness Council said: "Following careful consideration, it has been concluded that conducting a full repair to restore the bridge to its original condition is not feasible, or cost-effective, due to the nature and extent of the issue that poses challenges associated with reconstructing the brickwork arch."

The council added that it is planning to replace the structure with a timber footbridge of the same width that is 'in keeping with local area.'

"Our aim to replace the bridge during summer 2025, however it will be prioritised alongside other schemes based on safety risk and the level of impact on the highway network," the spokesperson added.

The council advised pedestrians that an alternative route is available less than 150 metres away from the current closure.
