A NEW fence will be installed near the jetty at Roa Island after a dog entered the water and disappeared.

'Bodie' has not been seen since September 3 after he fell into the water. His owner Daryl Archer has since launched a crowdfunding campaign to implement safety measures at the jetty.

A new permanent sign warning dog walkers and families about the strong currents around the jetty has already been installed with the backing of Barrow town councillor Paul Griffiths.

Mr Archer said he has received 'confirmation' from the council to install a two metre by one metre fence between the jetty and the entrance to the lifeboat station.

Previously, a gate at the bottom of the steps was discussed but according to Mr Archer it was decided it would be 'too much of a hinderance' to regular users safely accessing the jetty.

The new sign will include a warning symbol and states:

  • JETTY IS TIDAL
  • STRONG CURRENTS
  • STRONG WINDS
  • SLIPPERY SURFACE
  • FALLS FROM EDGES

It also asks families to keep dogs on lead and to supervise children while on the jetty. In the event of an emergency, call 999 and ask for a coastguard, it states.

He said he is waiting to hear from the council if they want him to pay for the sign - if they decide not to the money donated will be split between the RNLI/Coastguard and Bay Search and Rescue.

"Thank you to everyone who has donated to the GoFundMe," he said. "I am running Manchester half marathon on Sunday and if you would like to sponsor me or just want to donate to the cause please use the link below."

Mr Archer then paid tribute to Bodie and said 'rest in peace.'

After Bodie disappeared, a floral tribute was left at the site calling him a 'good dog.'
