The president of Playdale Playgrounds has been appointed to a new economic board.

Barry Leahey MBE will join the Cumbrian Economic Growth Board, which will succeed the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership.

The board will be made up of business leaders in the area who will take part in regional decision-making to shape the future of Cumbria.

Mr Leahey has been a vocal advocate for SMEs and manufacturers and will now help with the economic development of the county.

The new chairman of the board, David Beeby, said: "It is an exciting time ahead as we help to develop and deliver an economic strategy for the area whilst continuing to deliver a wide range of programmes that assist businesses with skills development, business improvement, and productivity issues."

The role will provide a voice for businesses and organisations, supporting inclusive economic growth, investing in skills, and promoting Cumbria as a 'great place to live, work, and do business'.

Mr Leahey's commitment to the well-being of Cumbria, its residents, the environment, and the economy has been recognised with several awards and honours.

He was the runner-up for the Great Britain Business Leader of the Year in 2023, and was awarded the Board of Trade Award from the Department of International Trade in 2019.

In 2017, he was honoured with an MBE for services to UK trade and exports.

In recognition of his dedication to academia and entrepreneurial pursuits, Mr Leahey was appointed as a Professor of Practice at the University of Cumbria in 2021.

He was also made an Honorary Professorial Fellow of Entrepreneurship & Strategy at Lancaster University in 2019.

On his appointment, Mr Leahey said: "I am truly honoured and excited to contribute to the Cumbrian Economic Growth Board, playing a part in shaping the future of Cumbria's economic landscape as part of this newly formed organisation."
