OPENREACH has apologised after drivers reported a hole with 'no markings or warning' in the carriageway left after work.

The hole was on the left of the A590 heading to Barrow at Lindal, it is said. One driver said that it 'almost just blew one of our tyres.' Another said it was 'too late' and it had cost them a tyre, as well as others saying it caused a loud bang when their car went over it.

National Highways, which manages the A590 as it is a trunk road, said that they are 'aware of a defect' and said it was following works undertaken by BT. The agency said it had been in discussion with BT to organise emergency repairs.

A spokesperson from Openreach, a subsidiary of BT, said: "We’re very sorry for any inconvenience caused to road users in the vicinity of Ulverston Road."

The spokesperson said that a manhole had become unsafe, and contractors attended to carry out repairs.

“Shortly after we were made aware that the area around the manhole hadn’t been fully reinstated and we immediately sent an engineer to do a temporary reinstatement. A permanent reinstatement will be completed as quickly as possible," they added.
