A new exhibition featuring 16 contemporary artists from across the UK is launching in Kendal this month.
Strange Gaze: Surrealism will open at Cross Lane Projects on Friday, October 4, from 6pm to 8pm.
It will then run from October 5 to November 24.
The exhibition is part of a worldwide celebration marking 100 years of surrealism.
The term 'surrealist', meaning 'beyond reality', was introduced by French avant-garde poet Guillaume Apollinaire in 1917.
Surrealism sought to transform human experience by combining rational life with the power of the unconscious and dreams.
Artists like Jean Arp, Max Ernst, René Magritte, and Salvador Dalí found beauty in the unexpected and unconventional.
Today's neo-surrealism adapts the original ideas to fit what each artist finds relevant now.
Curated by artist Rebecca Scott, the exhibition includes dreamlike and figurative works that respond to today's political and ecological climate.
The artists featured are Emily Allchurch, Hans Bellmer, Dan Coombs, Emma Cousin, Mark Fairnington, Ian Frith Powell, Martin Greenland, Dereck Harris, Denise Hawrysio, Mike Healey, James Mackie, Bex Massey, Pascal Rousson, Rebecca Scott, Perdita Sinclair, and Suzy Willey.
