A woman from Ulverston has been completing 80 challenges to celebrate what would have been her mum's 80th birthday.

Jess Muckelt is raising money for St Mary's Hospice in the process, the charity that cared for her mum, Jean, before she died as a result of bowel cancer in 2022.

It is Jean's legacy that has inspired Jess to take on the 'madness', building upon what her mum once did a decade ago.

Jess said: "10 years ago, Mum did 70 things she wanted to do before she was 70, so in her memory I've been doing 80 challenges to raise money for St. Mary's Hospice in her memory.

"It's been a year long challenge with lots of different things I've been learning, playing, watching, listening to and, of course, wheelchair and exercise bike distance challenges."

Jess has dystonia in her left leg and left hand meaning it makes walking longer distances hard work, with Jess using a manual wheelchair outside of the house.

Her condition means that the success seen in her challenges so far is even more spectacular.

Coming to an end on what would have been her mum's birthday on Friday, September 27, Jess completed the 'Nile 500 mile' challenge which sees participants cover the length of the river in 40 days.

Added to this, between January 20 and August 18, Jess put herself through a 1600 mile-long 'trans-Europe' wheelchair trip.

Not to mention a near 600 mile virtual adventure of the Arctic done via her exercise bike, which Jess also brought to an end last week.

Whilst those are the standout accomplishments for Jess, the 80 challenges have also covered less physically taxing tasks.

An 80-question quiz book was made all about Ulverston, 80 mini Herdy sheep were created, and 80 books have been read, all of which are just the tip of the iceberg for what has been a hectic 12 months for Jess.
