Sedbergh's red squirrel mascot, Cyril, delighted crowds at the town's artisan market.

Cyril was joined by Mark and Jennie Christie, coordinators of the Sedbergh Red Squirrel Group, and other volunteers, who set up a stall to raise awareness about the endangered red squirrels.

The species is at risk in Northern England due to loss of habitat and competition with grey squirrels, which carry a virus lethal to red squirrels.

The red squirrel is listed as endangered and features on the the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list for England and Wales.

The efforts of conservation groups have been crucial in preventing the extinction of the red squirrel in Cumbria and the rest of Northern England.

The species is already extinct in most of the south.

Residents can find out more about red squirrels and how they can help by visiting the Sedbergh Red Squirrel Group’s website at sedberghredsquirrels.org.uk.
