FARM bosses 'never expected' the response it had when it opened up a field for the public to pick their own sunflowers.

The Milk Hut, which operates from High Roosebeck Farm, Goadsbarrow, opened a field full of sunflowers on Saturday allowing visitors to pick the flowers 24/7 until they were all gone.

Chris Ford, from the Milk Hut, said the sunflowers were planted in June and had eventually reached enough flowers for them to open.

He was initially unsure if the sunflowers would grow due to them being difficult to flower until he finally saw the heads appear. He said the sunflowers changed 'rapidly' with so almost appearing to change hourly.

"We never expected the amount of people to come that weekend," he said. "We loved seeing the amount of people enjoy walking around choosing their own sunflower, then enjoying coffee, cakes and milkshakes after.

"The feedback we have received has been so nice, everyone seems to have had a really good time."

He said some customers praised him for providing a family morning out that 'doesn't break the bank' which pleased him as a father of five.

The business is celebrating its third year of offering fresh milk and milkshakes from its vending machine on the farm which is open 24 hours.

There are 'big plans' for the future of the farm, Chris said. They will install a robotic milking system, which will be located behind the hut.

This will allow customers to stand and watch the cows being milked in their own environment, he said.

In September, the business announced that it would be taking orders for celebration cakes.
